Nana Akufo-Addo Elected President of ECOWAS!

Following the 57th summit of heads of state of the regional organization, Ghanaian head of state Nana Akufo-Addo was elected as the new president. He succeeds the Nigerien Issoufou Mahamadou elected at the head of the community on June 29, 2019 for a one-year term.

The information was confirmed by the director of communications at the Ghanaian presidency, Eugene Arhin. While the Nigerien president announced on the occasion of his election that he will give “high priority to regional unity, to the consolidation of democratic institutions and the economic integration of our States”, the Ghanaian president intends to place his mandate under the sign of integration.

The heads of state will discuss the special report on Covid-19 to be presented by Nigerien President Mouhamadou Issoufou. They will receive a special report on the ECOWAS single currency program presented by the President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio.

The summit will also discuss the report on the activities of the sub-regional bloc, including the ECOWAS Vision 2050, which will be presented by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean Claude Kassi Brou.

West African leaders are also expected to consider the alarming rise in terrorist activity, insurgency, armed banditry and piracy in the sub-region, while disruption of the democratic process by the military in Mali will be the focus of attention. special attention.

In addition, general and presidential elections in Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea and Niger are scheduled for this year and the imperative to strengthen democracy in the sub-region while respecting the constitutional provisions, the rule of law and the results of free and fair elections will be underlined during this summit.

Nana Akufo Addo will have her work cut out for her in these times when the ECOWAS zone is experiencing strong democratic turbulence with popular uprisings against the third mandates. The last time a Ghanaian held the post of President of ECOWAS was in 2014. And it was John Dramani Mahama, who will be the main opponent of the current head of state of Ghana next December.
